The Feynman Technique: Learn Anything by Teaching It
If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. The Feynman Technique turns that idea into a powerful way to study.
Named after the physicist Richard Feynman, the Feynman Technique is a deceptively simple way to learn deeply: to truly understand something, try to explain it in plain language as if teaching a beginner. Where it breaks down is exactly where your understanding is weak — and that's the point.
The four steps
- Pick a concept and write its name at the top of a blank page.
- Explain it in simple words, as if teaching someone who knows nothing about it — no jargon, no copying the textbook.
- Notice where you get stuck, vague or reach for technical terms you can't unpack. Those are your gaps.
- Go back to your material, fill those gaps, and simplify your explanation further.
Why it works
Explaining something forces active retrieval and reveals the illusion of understanding. It's easy to read a passage and feel you 'get it', but the moment you try to explain it out loud in your own words, any shakiness becomes obvious. You can't hide behind familiar phrasing when you have to rebuild the idea from scratch — and rebuilding it is what cements it in memory.
Simple language is the test
The heart of the technique is using plain language. Jargon lets you parrot an explanation without really understanding it; forcing yourself to avoid it exposes whether you actually grasp the underlying idea. If you can explain a concept to a curious twelve-year-old, you understand it. If you can only explain it by quoting definitions, you don't yet.
How to fit it into revision
You don't need a real audience. Explain a topic out loud to an empty room, write it as if for a friend, or teach it to a classmate and let them ask questions. Each time you'll find the fuzzy spots and can go fix them. Pair it with self-testing — explain a concept, then quiz yourself on it — and you close the loop between understanding and recall.
When to use it
The Feynman Technique shines for concepts you need to understand rather than just memorise — processes, causes and effects, and anything where an exam might ask you to explain 'why' or 'how'. For pure facts, retrieval practice and spaced repetition do the job; for genuine understanding, teaching it is hard to beat.
